Caseville Lottery Winner Found Dead

A Caseville man who had recently won the lottery was found dead Sept. 24.

Caseville Police Chief Kyle Romzek said the body of Gregory Allen Jarvis was found on a private beach by a property owner just north of Caseville County Park around 9:30 a.m. Friday morning.

Romzek said an autopsy was performed later in the day, which revealed 57-year-old Jarvis was the victim of an accidental drowning. Romzek estimated Jarvis had been in the water approximately four or five days and said the timeline lines up with a period of strong currents that hit the shoreline. Jarvis was a seasonal resident of Caseville and lived aboard his boat. Romzek said he believes Jarvis was tying up his boat when he accidentally hit his head on the boat or the seawall, causing him to lose consciousness and fall into the water.

On Sept. 13, Jarvis had won $45,000 playing the lottery at Dufty’s Blue Water Inn. Romzek said Jarvis still had the winning lottery ticket in his wallet when his body was found. Romzek said Jarvis tried claim his winnings but was unable to do so because of the condition of his social security card. Instead, Jarvis had to apply for a new card and it hadn’t arrived yet.

Caseville Police Department was assisted on scene by the Caseville Township police, Huron County Sheriff’s Office and Caseville Fire Department.
