If Putin Decides to End the War, Will Russians Support Him? When Asked by Levada, 70% of Respondents Answered “Yes”


Russians are ready to support ending the war (if Putin decides so). They are for negotiations with Ukraine

The majority of Russians would support an immediate cessation of hostilities in Ukraine, according to  a Levada Center poll . However, the majority of respondents do not agree that the territories seized by Russia should be returned to Ukraine.

As part of a survey about the war, which Levada conducts every month, respondents were randomly divided into two equal groups. The first group was asked: “If President Vladimir Putin decided to end the military conflict with Ukraine this week, would you support or not support this decision?”

Answers

  • 37% – definitely support
  • 33% – I would rather support it
  • 12% – definitely won’t support
  • 9% – I would rather not support it
  • 9% – difficult to answer

The second group of respondents was asked the question: “If this week President Vladimir Putin decided to end the military conflict with Ukraine and return the annexed territories of Ukraine, would you support or not support this decision?”

Answers

  • 16% – definitely support
  • 18% – I would rather support it
  • 19% – I would rather not support
  • 38% – definitely won’t support
  • 10% – I find it difficult to answer

When asked whether hostilities should continue or peace negotiations should begin, more than half of respondents answered that they were in favor of negotiations.

Russians support the Russian army

Three quarters of those surveyed said they support “the actions of the Russian armed forces in Ukraine.” Among respondents in the age group 18-24 years old, 62% said this, among respondents over 55 years old – 82%.

Almost half of Russians would like to “cancel” the decision to start the war

Respondents were asked the question: “If you had the opportunity to go back in time and cancel or support the start of a military operation in Ukraine, would you…”

  • 23% would definitely cancel it
  • 18% would rather cancel it
  • 22% would rather support it
  • 21% would definitely support it
  • 15% – I find it difficult to answer

Russians believe that the war will continue for a long time. Although ” SVO “, in their opinion, is going well

Almost half of those surveyed (46%) believe that the war between Russia and Ukraine will last for more than a year. In May 2022, three months after the start of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, 21% of respondents thought so.

At the same time, 62% of respondents are confident that the “special operation” of the Russian army in Ukraine is progressing “very successfully” or “rather successfully.”

Why did Russia start the war?

23% of survey participants do not know why. Or you found it difficult to answer. More – only those who believe that Russia “protects and liberates” the residents of Donbass (25%). Every tenth person believes that “our historical lands must be returned.” 14% said that it was necessary to “eradicate fascism”, 13% – that “we were forced, we were offended.”
